Get Ready to Work Behind the Scenes in Film & TV

Are you an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person based in Western Australia with a passion for what happens behind the camera?
Ever wondered how your skills from live events, theatre, gaming or community projects could translate into a career on set?

Funded by Screenwest and supported by BBC Studios, Set Educated is a free, two-day immersive workshop designed to introduce you to life as crew in the screen industry. Whether you’ve worked in production before or are just curious about where you might fit, this is your chance to learn directly from some of the best in the business—and maybe even land a job.

 

Workshop Details:

 

  • Location: Perth – Travel support is available for Regional Practitioners
  • Dates: Sunday 25th and Monday 26th May
  • Eligibility: Free to attend, but places are limited and by application only

What’s on offer:

  • Meet local producers and crew hiring for upcoming productions
  • Visit the set of a real TV production
  • Learn about roles in departments like camera, lighting, locations, sound, ADs and more
  • Be part of a culturally safe learning space
  • Hear from trailblazing Indigenous creatives including Beck Cole, Murray Lui and Kodie Bedford

There may be paid crew roles available following the workshop. You don’t need any prior film or TV experience—but you do need to be enthusiastic, committed, and ready to explore the possibilities

How to apply

Click the button below to fill in a short form. We’ll ask why you’re interested, what areas you’re curious about, and what experience you’ve had (formal or informal) in things like screen, events or production.

All applications will be reviewed by Screen Careers including a First Nations assessor.

Once your application has been accepted, you will receive an invitation from us to join the event. We will send out invitations by Friday, May 9th, so keep an eye out to see if you’ve been selected.

Workshop Outline – Set Educated WA 

Purpose:

To provide a culturally grounded, informative, and practical introduction to screen crew careers for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Western Australia—particularly those with transferable skills.

 

Participant Journey:

Phase 1: Application & eLearning
  • Submit an online application explaining your interest, experience and department preferences 
  • If selected, complete the Set Educated eLearning course online before the in-person workshop 

 

Phase 2: In-Person Workshop

Day 1 – Sunday 25th May

  • Welcome to Country by a local Aboriginal Elder 
  • Intro session with Denise Eriksen over morning tea: What to expect & how to get the most from the workshop 
  • Yarning circles with industry crew from: 
    • Art Department 
    • Production Office 
    • Camera / Grip / Gaffer 
  • Catered breaks throughout: lunch and afternoon tea 
  • Dinner Session: Meet local producers, production managers, and department heads in an informal networking setting 

Day 2 – Monday 26th May

  • Conversations with Creatives: Director Beck Cole, DOP Murray Lui and writer/EP Kodie Bedford share their journeys and industry insight 
  • Set Visit: Behind-the-scenes tour of an active TV production.
  • Roundtables with Producer Andy Walker & Co-Producer Fiona McConaghy: Small group chats about what it’s really like to work on set and what roles may be available on upcoming shows
Phase 3: Career Support & Interviewing
  • For those ready to pursue work: one-on-one interviews if there are roles available (TBC).  
  • Tailored advice on job hunting, applications and getting that all-important first gig 
Phase 4: On-the-Job Training & Support
  • Those who secure work placements will get a personalised training plan including technical and soft skills 
  • Ongoing support provided throughout their time on set

FAQs

Can I apply if I don’t have any screen industry experience?

Yes, of course you can but you must demonstrate transferable skills and genuine enthusiasm for this field in your long term career.

What if I don't live in Western Australia?

We’re really sorry but due to production funding, you mustbe a resident of Western Australia. If shortlisted, you may be required to show proof of residency. Evidence of proof can be utility bill, phone bill etc. 

Can adjustments be made to the role?

Yes absolutely, if you are Disabled or need adjustments/flexibility due to family life or other circumstances we will be very open to those conversations. Please contact us at hello@screencareeers to discuss further.

When will I get an outcome to my application?
